Year 5 Topic and Maths Learning Journey

Week beginning: 3/11/2020

Topic - Our new topic will be a geography focus: European Explorers. 

Hook activity - children will be finding out about 5 different countries in Europe and completing passports with key information (geography).
I can locate Europe and the countries and cities within it on a world map (geography).
I can locate major physical features of Europe (geography). 

I can research information about a European country and identify reasons why tourists visit a European country (geography). 

 

 

Maths

I can apply number bonds to 10 and 100 to 1,000,000.  
I can use decide whether a calculation should be completed mentally or using a written method.
I can use < , > or = between two equations. 
I can solve missing number problems.

I can describe how Alfred the Great united the four kingdoms of Britain (History).
I can identify the key figure of Athelstan and describe his importance (History).

Maths

I can use column subtraction up to 5 digits where both numbers are 5 digits.  
I can use column subtraction up to 5 digits with different amounts of digits e.g. a 5 digit number subtract a 4 digit number. 
I can use column subtraction with decimal numbers where they have the same number of decimal places.

  • Hook activity: I can participate in Anglo-Saxon style games and build a Viking longship. 

 

  •  I can identify where Anglo Saxons and Vikings fit on a timeline.

 

  • I can use a range of sources to understand what life was like for the Anglo Saxons.

Maths:

  • Place Value: read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10 000 and determine the value of each digit. use (<, >, =, ≤, ≥ ) use Gattegno chart to identify the value of each digit.  
     
  • Place Value: read, write, order and compare numbers up to 100 000 and determine the value of each digit. use (<, >, =, ≤, ≥ ) use Gattegno chart to make links between 532 and 532 000 and notice similarities and differences between these to identify the value of each digit and understand how      100 000 numbers are read aloud. 
     
  • Place Value: read, write, order and compare numbers up to 1 000 000 and determine the value of each digit. use (<, >, =, ≤, ≥ ) 
     
  • Place Value: use understanding of PV to add without bridging mentally (Gattegno chart) and notice how given digits change in a number
